Emotional Response from Students Who Just Learned Anonymous Donors Have Paid Off Their Student Debt

This month, a group of anonymous donors pooled together nearly $8 million dollars to pay off the student loan debt for over 400 students and college graduates. All of the individuals whose loans are being paid off are alumni of Students Rising Above (SRA), a nonprofit organization that helps send low-income, first-generation college students to four-year colleges and universities.

The group learned of the donation on a recorded Zoom call, which captured their emotional responses in the following video:

One of these students was quoted in an article from Good Morning America, stating,

“Having this much debt and such a huge proportion of my paycheck going to pay off this debt, you have to think of even the smallest purchases,” he added. “If I get coffee because I’m a tired, working resident physician, there’s some tingle in the back of my mind about how that is money away from the debt that I could be paying, and then you start spinning and extrapolating.”

He said that thanks to this generous donation, he will finally be able to follow his dreams of working in global health overseas.

This is just one of the many inspiring stories of generosity that’s been born in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, reminding us all of the good that can come from even the most devastating circumstances.
